CHALLENGE:

Wellvene was engaged by a major North Sea client for a large multi-well intervention campaign. The scope varied across wells, including Wireline Reperforating, Slickline fishing, and general surveillance. Given that these wells had not been accessed for several years and had a high likelihood of Scale (NORM) buildup, the client sought a solution to minimise unnecessary wireline runs when confirming well access.

Typically, a Slickline drift run is performed using a nominal drift OD suited to the tubing and production liner. If restrictions are encountered, multiple additional runs with smaller drifts are required to determine the minimum accessible ID. Only then can the client decide whether to proceed with planned interventions or deploy scale removal tools - adding time, cost, and operational complexity.

SOLUTION:

To confirm wellbore access and reduce unnecessary wireline runs, Wellvene proposed our WellDrift—a unique, multistage drift tool that dynamically reduces in size when encountering a restriction, providing an entire wellbore drift and accurate inner diameter measurement in a single run. The WellDrift is the only singlerun drift tool with full 360-degree wellbore coverage, combined with an emergency collapse feature for ensuring recovery.

For this campaign, a complete WellDrift package, covering 3.5”–7” tubulars, was mobilised. Its value was quickly realized when, during one of the initial Slickline drift runs, a restriction (later confirmed as a scale bridge) was encountered. The Slickline operator lightly jarred down, reducing the WellDrift OD by 0.1 inch per attempt until the tool successfully passed through the scale. Upon retrieval, the WellDrift confirmed the well’s inner diameter, allowing the operator to select the correct scale scraper size on the first attempt. This ensured an efficient intervention while minimising unnecessary runs.

VALUE CREATED:

Unlike traditional Slickline drift runs, which require multiple runs into the well with progressively smaller drifts, the WellDrift captured the critical wellbore dimensions in one efficient single run. This allowed the client to make informed decisions instantly, optimising intervention planning and minimising operational downtime through wasted additional slickline drift runs.
