A bespoke straddle solution for complex well integrity challenges.

CHALLENGE:

Multiple interventions were undertaken to install a longer-term WRSSSV solution; however, none provided a permanent fix due to damage within the seal bore, which prevented conventional packing stacks from achieving a reliable and repeatable seal.

Without a successful solution, the client faced the prospect of continued intervention difficulties, additional offshore campaign costs, increased operational risk and further lost production with the Well being Shut-In

With the enhanced design yet to be deployed, the solution also required extensive development and qualification within an accelerated 10–12 week project schedule.

SOLUTION:

Wellvene’s electromechanically set Enhanced WellVeX™ Straddle, complete with Tejas FlowGARD™, provided a solution by delivering reliable compressed-element isolation across the damaged seal bores. This new approach to setting standard WRSSSV straddles, using the WellSet Setting Tool, eliminated the need to spang jar conventional seals into the seal bore, resulting in a more controlled, robust, and reliable sealing solution.

The solution involved:

  • Custom Enhanced WellVeX™ Straddle designed for reliable sealing across damaged bore.
  • Custom Enhanced WellVeX™ Straddle designed for reliable sealing across damaged bore.
  • Integration of client-owned Tejas FlowGARD™ valves through a bespoke adaptor system engineered by Wellvene.
  • WellSet™ electro-mechanical setting system, eliminating the requirement to jar conventional packing stacks into position.
  • Dedicated running and pulling tools for deployment and retrieval.
  • Extensive qualification and full-system testing, including API 14L V0 validation, to demonstrate sealing performance, pressure containment and mechanical integrity.

Additional testing assessed damagedbore sealing performance, setting forces, shear systems and contingency recovery methods, providing confidence in the system before offshore mobilisation.

RESULT/VALUE CREATED:

By engineering the system around the well conditions and integrating existing
client equipment, Wellvene enabled the client to re-instate safety valve integrity with a solution designed to improve sealing reliability and reduce intervention risk.

Key benefits included:

  • Reduced operational risk through extensive pre-deployment qualification and testing.
  • Elimination of conventional packing stack technology that had previously struggled to seal in the damaged bore.
  • Integration and reuse of client’s owned Tejas FlowGARD™ valves.
  • A complete engineered package including the Enhanced WellVeX™ Straddle, WellSet™ deployment system, bespoke adaptors, and dedicated running and pulling tools.
  • A methodology with potential application to future damaged-bore interventions across the client’s assets.
  • Proven capability to develop innovative intervention solutions for complex well integrity challenges.

The project demonstrated how Wellvene’s combination of advanced sealing technology, bespoke engineering and rigorous qualification can address complex well integrity challenges where conventional intervention approaches have proven ineffective.
The result was a robust, field-ready solution capable of delivering reliable isolation where conventional approaches had proven unsuccessful.
